Don’t Be Fooled By Fraudulent Charities
Before you write that check or text a $10 donation to a special number, you should do a little homework. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) web page offers a list of actions and advice to help ensure the charity is legitimate. The FTC list the following websites for you to research charitable organizations:
- Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance
- Charity Navigator
- Charity Watch
- IRS Search for Tax Exempt Organizations
- National Association of State Charity Officials
Should you be contacted over the phone by a charity soliciting donations, we recommend you always ask them to send you the solicitation in writing. Never be coerced into an immediate donation by providing a credit card number or wiring money into another’s account, and never agree to a request to donate in cash. Legitimate charities will not apply such pressure and will be happy to send you detailed information for further consideration. Make sure your hard-earned money truly goes to help those in need.
